French Bulldogs are a loyal and smart breed, but particularly stubborn. However, once they have learned something, they will retain it forever. Be very patient with your new puppy, as we go through some quick tips to getting your pup potty trained.
- Schedule Regular Times
- Taking your puppy at regular times throughout the day will reinforce the fact that they should be doing their business “outside”. Make sure to take them out after they have finished eating and drinking, once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and before bed. Make sure to have a regular feeding time as well so that can allow them to get used to creating habits.
- Using a Pee Pad
- Have puppy pee pads for the occasional accident. Your puppy is bound to have a few accidents while learning. Be patient with them and prepare in advance with pee pads. They will help with catching urine as well as preventing odor from getting out of hand.
- Identifying when your Dog needs to “go”
- Your dog will make indications when it needs to go potty, but some dogs do it differently than others. Recognize what sounds it might be making, such as a whining sound, or it might bark while at the door, trying to tell you they need to go outside.
- Don’t use Negative Reinforcement
- Don’t punish your puppy if it makes an accident in the house. Puppies don’t have very long memories, so they won’t understand why they are being scolded. It will only make your puppy afraid of you.
- Using the “Go Potty” command
- Teaching a puppy a new command can be difficult, so you will want to teach your new puppy the “go potty” command as early as possible. Praise them when they are “doing their business” outside, while telling them the command. Your goal is to associate the action with the command so that your puppy will then perform the action.
